Our well-beaten Ultimate Adventure Tacoma’s reconstruction is finally underway. I’ve spent the last week in the shop cutting, welding, and shaping sheetmetal.
It’s been lots of work, but the old UA truck is well worth it because the rig is unbelievably capable on the trail. The transformation into a pseudo-buggy probably wouldn’t have taken so long if I didn’t have so many obligations and editorial deadlines. Oh, don’t get me wrong (it’s what I live for (some of it!). I love the job at Petersen’s 4-Wheel & Off-Road, it’s fun, exciting, and definitely keeps me on my toes.
I’m not going to spill the entire can of beans about the Taco’, so you can read all about how we fixed the crumpled cab in the August 2008 issue of the magazine. We also figured out how we are going to tackle the recurring problem of broken stub shafts on the Tacoma’s front Dana 44. Keep an eye out for our UA Tacoma tech in upcoming issues of the magazine.
