Recently I headed down to San Diego to pick up a couple parts and participate in a little fist drive with Ford. While down in the SD area I shot over to Predator Motorsports in Vista to see what the Hummer experts had going on. While GM may have turned the H1 into a thing of the past, you couldn’t tell by looking in Predators shop. Lined with H1’s inside and out, each AM General beast was receiving some level of work. From complete engine swaps to basic service there was a ton of Hummer action. While there I had the opportunity to ride in one of their custom H1’s that received the Duramax engine and Allison transmission upgrade package. Seeing how I’ve been around stock H1’s for years, it was a real treat to feel the tremendous power upgrade over the early models 6.5L and 6.2L diesels.
After leaving the Hummer performance Mecca it got me thinking about doing an H1 build. Doing a little searching on the web I found that they can be picked up relatively cheap, but the aftermarket is somewhat limited. So what do you think? Does a H1 project vehicle sound appealing to you? Maybe we can go do a shoot out with the Army? Our Hummer vs. their HUMVEE. Of course they would have a 50 cal mounted on theirs and if we got in a race they might just use us for target practice…..
