1980's 4x4 Tow Rig

It's nice to see that some folks have held onto their older trucks and use them as they were built for.

Seeing the clean old GMC was a nice surprise, lets hope older rigs like this don't get traded in for scrap.

1. Heck these days with the recent "cash for clunkers" program, it is nice to see guys, (and girls for that matter, we must stay politically correct these days!!), using the 2nd Generation Dodge Ram trucks as tow rigs anymore! Guys like me that are strapped for cash and making our workhorses run still and not shelling out the green for the new trucks! Guys like my Dad that still have their '89 GMC 3500 dually with the 454, SM 420, NP205, and Dana 80 rear still hauling a huge Lance camper and pulling a 16' flat deck with a semi-built CJ-7 on it! It is all about the working man these days that keeps their junk running!!!
Nothing less to the guy that can afford the new vehicles and all of the accessories... but I have to give the props to the guys that are sticking it out and keeping their junk rolling!!!

2. Plus, you're bound to spend so much less on repairs for an older truck that's in decent shape than all the things that can go wrong on the computer systems in modernized trucks. In the long run you're probably better off if you DON'T spend the money on a new truck coupled with the money you'll probably have to spend in a few months to fix something because they don't make anything like they used to anymore.

3. That's pretty neat!

But I'll be that guy... I'll take a new tow rig with power to spare, comfy seats, AC, and a kickin stereo over an '80s truck any day. I like being the guy doing the passing up the grades, not the guy stuck doing 40 in the truck lane.

4. I love this! I do my towing with a 1978 3/4 ton Chevy camper special with a 383 smallblock, turbo 400, 203 transfer case and 4.10 gears. It's got ac power windows and a stereo system. minus the $1,000 a month payment

6. I'm working with a buddy right now on building a towrig. What started as a hacked up/jacked up 79 F250 crewcab with an I6 and a 4 speed, is now getting built into a hauler. It's body is getting put on a 97 F-Superduty chassis with a Powerstroke and ZF 5 speed. We're working on getting it driving and down the road before we convert it to 4wd. He's looking to swap in as many up to date interior pieces as possible and making it a comfy truck for a week long road trip etc. Old iron is good stuff....
