The New Eco Trend

No Spare

Say good by to the full-size spare and hello to fix-a-flat?

I recently read an automotive news article that focused on the fact that many new auto manufacturers are no longer providing full-sized spares. In fact, in an effort to cut down on weight, many eco boxes don't even have a spare at all. To supplement many of these new vehicles come with fix-a-flat and some are simply equipped with ultra pricey run-flat tires.

On the trail I can't see being without a spare, but on the street (mainly around town) I can see how it's easy to live without. I recently removed the heavy 37-inch spare that mounted to the back of my JK's tailgate. Since the Jeep has onboard air, I simply loaded up with a quality plug kit and called it a day. It's nice to be able to cut down on the weight and I really enjoy the added rear visibility. I think the last time I got a flat (on the road) was about six years ago and a plug kit and air compressor could have made that day much better!
